The Smith river gets a good salmon run in the fall. It also sees a run of coastal cutthroat and a healthy amount of steelhead. This river is in the very Northernmost part of California in the shade of the giant redwood trees. Even if you come here and don't catch any trout species, you will certainly not regret coming, because of the ultra clear water and the spectacular scenery. The Smith River is one of very few free flowing coastal rivers in Norcal without any dams.
Around Redding California the Sacramento river produces a lot of trout.
The Truckee starts in NV and flows into California. There are a lot of access points to be found on public land.
